Marcus Middleton is a Brooklyn-based photographer whose work spans live performance, photojournalism, and intimate portraiture and has been featured in The New York Times, VOGUE, Town and Country Magazine, and Charleston Magazine.
Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, Middleton spent his early childhood on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina where both of his parents grew up. After moving to Texas and Illinois due to his father’s Air Force career, he later returned to Charleston. During a months-long stay, Middleton began studying photography, using the largely undeveloped Sea Islands as his muse. His love of the islands inspired his 2023 installation at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center entitled “Calling Me Home: A Visual Ode to the Lowcountry,” an expanded version of which was on view at City Gallery at Waterfront Park through February 9, 2025 .
In 2014, Middleton relocated to New York City, where he began his photography career. He was fortunate to have friends who owned a small theater company, and they hired him to shoot an event as soon as he moved back to New York. This opportunity allowed him to gain experience and grow as a visual artist. At the heart of his work he is a photojournalist, and he will always strive to capture the aliveness of the present moment. Known for capturing the energy of the moment with a documentary sensibility, Middleton approaches every project as a storyteller, blending technical skill with a deep emotional resonance.
Middleton’s photography is characterized by its storytelling quality and its ability to convey a deep sense of intimacy. Whether photographing a live performance, a family gathering, or a portrait session, he aims to capture the essence of the moment, allowing viewers to connect with the subjects and scenes on a personal level.
